If you're wondering why Mrs. Anderson (Jonas's teacher) is holding a clipboard (it's unimportant, by the way...) it's to release the children at the end of the day. It has a list of their names and the clips go next to the names when they leave. The kids are supposed to hand their teacher the clip, the teacher puts it next to his or her name, and by doing that the teacher can keep track of who is still there, who has left, and so on. Very useful for a substitute teacher if the students remember to give the sub their clip. (I should know, I'm a sub.)

Not the end of the arc, but merely the middle of it.

At the elementary school I mostly sub at, I've known some of the fifth graders since they were in the second grade. Well, I was subbing for a class and the sister of one of the students was one of the students I had known since she was in the second grade. So when she came to wait with her sister for their ride, I was chatting with them. One of the obnoxious kids in the 2nd grade class started talking smack to the older sister and she told him to shut-up and I turned to her and said that it wasn't a good idea to say that around a second grader because they think it's a bad word. She tried arguing it wasn't, but I just told her that I meant the second graders thought it was. Anyway...no real point to the story, but Erin and Jonas are kind of like they are because the younger sibling is sweet and mostly quiet in school whereas the older sibling is a smart alec and not really all that nice.
